There are two steps to determining who can view or post to a Discussion. First, you set which students have the ability to post in a discussion, this is called a Discussion Type. There are four options for who can participate and you will set this in the first step of Discussion set-up:
- Class Discussion, everyone in a class
- Section Discussion, everyone in a section of a class
- Group Discussion, groups of students you create
- One-to-One Discussion, just you and the student
Note: Once the Discussion is created, it's type cannot be changed. Controlling the Discussion Type can only be adjusted on creation of the Discussion.
Second, the last three options allow you to restrict who can view a Discussion. For example, when you create a Section Discussion, there is an option to "All students can view other Section Discussions". If you check this option, all students in the Sections will be able to view the Discussion. If you leave this option unchecked the Discussion will only be viewable by those in one Section.
